An American author and communications theorist, he is best known for writing the thought-provoking book Future Shock. He is also known for his 1980 work, The Third Wave, which outlines his theory of different types of societies.


He graduated from New York University with a BA in English and subsequently spent five years working menial assembly line jobs in Midwestern factories. He later became a columnist for Fortune magazine.


He wrote at length about the digital and communications revolutions.
