About Luis Bunuel

Spanish-born surrealist filmmaker who first gained attention for directing the silent short film Un Chien Andalou in 1929. His most well known features include Los Olvidados (1950), The Exterminating Angel (1962), Simon of the Desert (1965) and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977).

He switched his major twice while in college, finally landing on psychology.

Knowledge Base

He was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards for three of his films. His films won various other awards, including the Palm d Or for 1961 s Viridiana and the Golden Lion for 1967 s Belle de jour.

He married Jeanne Bunuel in 1925 and became a Mexican citizen in 1948 after being exiled from Spain during the Spanish Civil War.

He co-wrote the script for Un Chien Andalou with Spanish painter and artist Salvador Dali.
