About Duke Slater

University of Iowa football legend who was also one of the first black players of professional football.

Early Life of Duke Slater

Entering Iowa during WW I, he was an All-Big Ten selection his freshman and sophomore seasons, and in his senior helped the team to snap Notre Dame s 20-game winning streak.

He entered the NFL as the first black lineman, and stayed there for the next ten seasons, becoming one of the most decorated players of the Rock Island Independents.

He was born in Normal, Illinois, and moved to Iowa where his father George Slater became a Methodist minister.
