About Edwin Binney

Inventor who is best known for his invention of the Crayola crayon. 


In 1885, he took control of his father s business, Peeksill Chemical Co. While experimenting with a mixture of slate waste, cement, and talc, he created the first dustless white chalk. In 1903, he created his first box of crayola crayons.  


He is the winner of a gold medal at the St. Louis World s Fair in 1902. He is also colorblind.

His wife Alice is known for creating the name of the brand Crayola, by adding two French words “craie” meaning chalk and “ola” short for olegineux, meaning oily.
