Chicago Surrealist Group poet, activist, editor, and scholar whose poetry collections include The Apple of the Automatic Zebra s Eye and An Open Entrance to the Shut Palace of Wrong Numbers. He edited several works on the history of surrealism, including The Forecast is Hot! and What is Surrealism?


He was the Chicago-born son of a jazz musician mother and a social activist father.


He wrote a biography of labor activist Joe Hill.
