About Eric Williams

From the early 1960s until his death, this People s National Movement leader served as Trinidad and Tobago s first Prime Minister. Also a scholar and author, he published an important 1944 work titled Capitalism and Slavery.


He earned both his bachelor s degree (in history) and his doctorate from St Catherine s College, Oxford. He began his political career as a member of the Anglo-American Caribbean Commission.


His autobiography, Inward Hunger, recounts his firsthand experience of racism while living in England.

He grew up in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, as the son of Thomas Henry Williams and Eliza Frances Boissiere. He later fathered children named Alistair, Erica, and Pamela.
