About

Austrian composer from the classical period who is known for contributing to the development of chamber music including the piano trio and string quartet. He was a court musician for the wealthy Esterhazy family and composed a wide range of symphonies and operas.

Before Fame

At the age of six he moved to Hainburg to study music. After performing in choir and working freelance as a musician, he earned a job from Count Morzin as Kapellmeister or music director. He wrote his first symphonies for the ensemble and began his career as a musician.

One of the most prolific composers, his output consisted of over 108 symphonies, 68 string quartets, 32 spanertimenti, 176 trios ranging from barytons, violas, cellos, pianos, and violins, 47 piano sonatas, 20 operas, and 14 masses.

Family Life

He was born and raised in Rohrau, Austria. His younger brother Michael Haydn was also a composer. He married Maria Anna Keller in 1760.

He is known for being both a friend and mentor to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a teacher of Ludwig van Beethoven.
