About Gunther Schuller

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, conductor, author, historian, jazz musician, and horn player. He and jazz pianist John Lewis were the founders of the Modern Jazz Society in 1955. He created the descriptor Third Stream for music that married classical and jazz techniques.


He played horn professionally with the American Ballet Theatre when he was only 15. His most famous works would be “Transformation” from 1957, “Concertino” from 1959, “Abstraction” from 1959, and “The Visitation” from 1966.


He won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for “Of Reminiscences and Reflections” in 1994.
