About Issei Sagawa

Five years after murdering and cannibalizing his classmate Renee Hartevelt in the early 1980s in Paris, France, this criminal was controversially allowed to live as a free man in his native Japan.

At the time he committed his crime, he was a doctoral student in literature at Paris Sorbonne. He invited his victim to dinner and shot her after asking her to translate German poetry.

Following his release from prison, he appeared in a Japanese horror film and wrote reviews for a culinary publication before being widely shunned by employers and the Japanese media. A French judge ruled him legally insane; however, Japanese psychiatrists later declared him to be of sound mind.
