About Katie Bouman

American computer scientist specializing in the field of imaging. She is best recognized for having been a key part of the Event Horizon Telescope Tam that captured the first image of a black hole in 2019. 


She studied electrical engineering at the University of Michigan where she graduated summa cum laude in 2011. She then earned her master s and doctoral degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She then joined Harvard University as a postdoctoral fellow on the Event Horizon Telescope Team. 


She is known for having been a member of the Haystack Observatory and was also supported as a student by the National Science Foundation s Graduate Fellowship program.

She was born and raised in West Lafayette, Indiana. Her father Charles Bouman was a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University.
