Former Poet Laureate of Virginia whose best-known works include Death and Transfiguration, Rising Venus, and Hazard and Prospect. Also a fiction and nonfiction writer, she published such works as In the Wink of an Eye and The Exiled Heart.


She attended the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Beginning in the late 1970s, she taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.


She wrote reviews for the Los Angeles Times and the New York Book Review.
