About Leo Jung

Recognized as the father of modern Orthodox Judaism in America, this rabbi served the congregation of New York s Jewish Center Synagogue and presided over the Torah Umesorah (a national organization of Hebrew schools).


After graduating from Cambridge University, he studied at the University of London and the Berlin Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary. His first rabbinical post was at the Knesset Israel synagogue in Cleveland, Ohio.


His published works include the book Living Judaism and the essays “What is Orthodox Judaism?” and “Modern Trends in American Judaism.”

His marriage to Irma Rothschild resulted in four daughters. He was born in Uhersky Brod, Moravia (located in the modern-day Czech Republic) to a rabbi father.
