About Margarete Schutte-Lihotzky

The first female Austrian architect. Her Frankfurt Kitchen, the prototype for modern built-in kitchens, continued to be emulated long after her death.


She was also the first female student at the University of Applied Arts Vienna where she came under the tutelage of Josef Hoffmann, Anton Hanak, and Oskar Kokoschka. She also studied with Oskar Strnad, during which time her designs began to win awards.


She was enlisted by Frankfurt architect and city planner Ernst May in 1926 to contribute to the New Frankfurt project.

Her family was of the bourgeois class, and her father espoused open-minded social and political views, including pacifism. She married William Schutte.
