American children s author best known for her series Nate the Great, about a child detective. As of 2014, she had written over 130 children s books.


Her first book published was Goodnight, Andrew; Goodnight Craig in 1969.


The film adaptation of her book Nate the Great Goes Undercover won the Los Angeles International Children s Film Festival Award.

She was born in Portland, Maine and raised alongside her sister Rosalind. She was married to Mitchell Sharmat.
