Early life

David Ngcobo originates from Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. He started rapping at the age of nine, having been influenced by his older brother who was a producer at the time.[7] He eventually mastered the process of music production and began adding his vocals on the beats he was making, later signing to Durban-based artist management company,Free World Music.[8]

Career

Nasty C released his first mixtape One Kid a Thousand Coffins on 24 May 2013.[9] His second project titled L.A.M.E (Extended Play Version) – EP was released on 4 April 2014. L.A.M.E. is an acronym for “Levitating Above My Enemies”.[10] On 10 February 2015 he would go on to release his highly successful mixtape, titled Price City. Off the tape was his major single “Juice Back” which later spawned a remix featuring Davido and Cassper Nyovest, produced by Gemini Major.[11]

On 9 January 2016, he was featured on Anatii and Cassper Nyovest’s collaborative single “Jump”.[12][13] The official music video for the remix to the single “Juice Back” was released on 17 January 2016. He appeared on SWAY in the Morning and freestyled over 6lack’s Prblms instrumental.[11] On 15 February 2018, he announced that he has officially signed to Universal Music Group and had departed from Mabala Noise.[14]

Career: Early 2010’s

The stage name ‘Nasty C’ was given to him by the first producer he ever worked with.[7] His dream of meeting one of his major influences became a reality when he met AKA, and opened for him during the nationwide album launch for AKA’s debut studio album Altar Ego. Nasty C highlights that performing alongside AKA at a Durban festival was one of the best experiences of his life.[8]

Bad Hair

Early 2016 he released Hell Naw[15] as the first single off his debut album “Bad Hair” which was set to be released later on. Hell Naw peaked at number 4 on the music charts in South Africa the song also peaked at number 1 on The Beat 99.9 FM African Top 10 chart in Nigeria.[16] After he signed to Mabala Noise Entertainment he finally released Bad Hair, a highly anticipated project on music streaming platform Audiomack. He later explained that this was due to a sample he couldn’t clear from one song in time before the release.[17] In December 2016 he released an extended version of Bad Hair, titled Bad Hair Extensions with notable singles like “Allow” featuring the American rapper, French Montana.[18]

Strings And Bling

On 6 July 2018, Nasty C released his second studio album Strings And Bling.[19] The album’s release was preceded by three singles “Jungle”, “King” and “Legendary”. Strings And Bling features guest appearances from American rapper A$AP Ferg, Rowlene and Kaien Cruz.[20][21] The album is praised for it’s remarkable production provided by Gemini Major and record producer Tweezy, the young rapper’s lyricism is also praised on tracks such as Another One Down. While also being criticized for being too long and having too much filler, the album is praised as one of the best rap albums of 2018 in South Africa.
