About William Loftus

English geologist, explorer, and archaeological excavation expert who discovered the ancient city of Uruk, Sumeria in 1849. He was at one point the assistant geologist for the Geological Survey of India before falling ill.

He began studying geology at Caius College, Cambridge in 1840. In 1849, he joined England s Turco-Persian Boundary Commission, working as a geologist and naturalist.

In 1845 he married Charlotte Thulbourne. At 38 years old he died at sea.

He and Vivian Fuchs were fellow British explorers and geologists.
