About Queen Sofia

The wife of Juan Carlos I King of Spain and the mother of King Felipe VI of Spain, Queen Sofia of Spain was born Princess Sophia Margarita Victoria Frederika of Greece and Denmark.


She spent her childhood in Greece, Egypt, South Africa, and Germany, and later attended Cambridge University s Fitzwilliam College in England.


She participated in the 1960 Olympic Games as a reserve member of Greece s champion sailing team.


Queen Sofia

Born to Frederica of Hanover and King Paul of Greece, she grew up with younger siblings named Princess Irene and Prince (later King) Constantine II. Her marriage to Juan Carlos of Spain began in 1962 and produced three children, including Duchesses Elena and Cristina.
