About Samuel Tilden Norton

Early 20th-century designer of many Los Angeles landmarks, including the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park. Founder and charter member of the Hillcrest Country Club.


He worked as a draftsman for Edward Neissen, a Los Angeles architect, upon finishing high school in 1895. He established his own Los Angeles-based architectural firm in 1902 after spending some time as a design apprentice in New York City.


He designed several Jewish landmarks in Los Angeles and was active in the Jewish community.


Samuel Tilden Norton

He was the son of Isaac and Bertha Norton; his father founded the building and loan firm, Metropolitan Building and Loan Assn., after moving to Los Angeles in 1869. He had one daughter, Elizabeth, with his wife, Esther Groedel.
