About Stuart Hall

Sociologist and cultural theorist whose influential works include Hard Road to Renewal (1988), Formations of Modernity (1992), and Questions of Cultural Identity (1996). He was also a founder of The Birmingham School of Cultural Studies and a frequent contributor to the leftist journal, Marxism Today.


He began his university career at Jamaica College and later attended Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship. In 1979, he began teaching sociology at Open University.


He served as president of the British Sociological Association in the late 1990s.
