About Berkeley Breathed

Cartoonist and illustrator whose best-known work was his Pulitzer Prize-winning comic strip “Bloom County,” featuring such iconic characters as Bill the Cat and Opus the Penguin.


He held his first cartooning position with the Austin American-Statesman, but his editorial work caused such controversy that he was fired. He gained notice by The Washington Post after he self-published his college newspaper strip “The Academia Waltz” to pay for his tuition.


He followed “Bloom County” with the Sunday-only “Outland” and “Opus” comic strips. He retired from comic strips in 2008 to focus on becoming a children s author.

His family was residing in Encino when he was born, but he was raised in Houston, Texas. He and his wife Jody Boyman had two children.
