Early life

Smith was born July 8, 1998 in Malibu, California,[1][7] the son of Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith. He has an older half-brother, Trey Smith (born 1992),[8] and a younger sister, Willow Smith (born 2000).[9] Smith attended New Village Leadership Academy before being homeschooled by his parents.[10] Growing up, Smith’s celebrity status due to acting in films such as The Pursuit of Happyness and his parents both being acclaimed actors led to him being isolated from having a normal childhood, something he has spoken on at length.[11] Smith wasn’t able to make friends with normal children and as such blended into the skateboarding scene, where he wasn’t as easily recognized.[12]

Smith and his siblings were youth ambassadors for Project Zambi, which provides assistance in conjunction with Hasbro for Zambian children orphaned by AIDS.[13][14]

Career

Acting

Smith made his major role debut in the 2006 film The Pursuit of Happyness as Christopher, the son of Chris Gardner, Will Smith’s character.[15] For his role, Smith won the award for Breakthrough Performance at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. Smith next appeared as Jacob in the 2008 Scott Derrickson science fiction film, The Day the Earth Stood Still,[15] a remake of the 1951 classic of the same name.

In 2010, along with Jackie Chan, Smith starred in The Karate Kid, a remake of the 1984 film.[16] In May 2013, Will Smith and Jaden starred together, playing father and son, in After Earth. In 2014, it was announced that Smith will return for the sequel Karate Kid 2 with Jackie Chan. The movie will be directed by Breck Eisner, produced by James Lassiter and Will Smith and written by Zak Penn.[17]

In April 2014, Smith was cast in the film The Good Lord Bird, which is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by James McBride. Smith plays Henry Shackleford, a young slave living in Kansas Territory in 1857 who encounters abolitionist John Brown.[18]

Smith took a break from acting following the release of his mixtape, Cool Tape Vol. 2 to focus on music, returning to act in Netflix original, The Get Down in 2017.[19][20] Smith also had a voice acting role in Neo Yokio[21] and a role in Nashville as himself. Talking on his break from acting, Smith said:

The kinds of roles I was being offered weren’t exactly what I was looking for, nothing felt really necessary that I needed to be in until [Skate Kitchen] came along.[22]

Smith has returned to acting in films with the announcement of a film based on skateboarding.[23] Smith will also act in the 2018 film Life in a Year alongside Cara Delevingne.[24] On 21 June, 2018, Crystal Moselle’s Skate Kitchen released its first official trailer showcasing Smith as the main character.[25] The film was officially released on August 10, 2018 after being showcased at Sundance in Winter 2017.[26]

Music

In 2010, Smith rapped alongside Canadian singer Justin Bieber in the song “Never Say Never.”[27] The song peaked at 8 on the Billboard Hot 100[28] and was certified 5x platinum in the US.[29]

On October 1, 2012, Jaden released his first mixtape, The Cool Cafe.[30] Smith released the sequel to The Cool Cafe on November 8, 2014, titled Cool Tape Vol. 2.[31]

Smith started work on his debut studio album in 2014, a process that took three years.[32] Smith announced in December 2016 that his debut studio album would be titled Syre.[33][34]The first single from Syre, “Fallen” was released on 5 December 2016,[35] two more singles were released, “Batman” and “Watch Me” on July 14, 2017.[36][37] The album was released on November 17, 2017.[38][39] “Icon” was released as a single on the same day[40] and reached no. 3 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.[41][42]

Smith later announced that his next project following Syre would be titled Erys on December 14, 2017.[43] Another project named Syre: The Electric Album was later teased via Twitter. Leading up to the release of the project, Smith released the single “Ghost” featuring Christian Rich.[44] On July 8, 2018, Smith released the project exclusively on Instagramon his 20th birthday.[45] The project was later released four days later to streaming platforms.[46] Syre: The Electric Album is an guitar-centric rework of Smith’s studio album Syre and is influenced by Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.[47]

On July 30, 2018, Smith was announced as an opener during J. Cole’s KOD Tour alongside Young Thug and EarthGang[48] and on August 2, performed for the first time at Lollapalooza.[49] One of Smith’s influences, Kid Cudi, stated that he would like to make an album with Smith which Smith supported, saying that he would like to in the future during an interview on August 21, 2018.[50][51]

Smith’s influences include Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Kurt Cobain and Tycho.[52] Speaking on his inspirations, Smith said “Kurt Cobain inspired me. Kid Cudi inspired me, Kanye. All of my homies inspired me. But the biggest inspiration in my life would be Kid Cudi and Tycho.”[53] Smith also considers his father, Will Smith, as an inspiration saying “He started in music and transitioned to movies. I started with movies, and then I transitioned into making music – I look at him and use it as a blueprint of how good of a person he is, but not necessarily the success that he reached.”[52]

Other work

GQ labeled Smith as “in a league of his own” in terms of fashion and a “superstar who has taken fashion to an entirely different level”.[54][55] Smith has called Tyler the Creator, Batman and Poseidon his icons when it comes to fashion.[56] Smith said that Tyler the Creator introduced him to the brand Supreme.[57] Batman’s dark, gothic scenery has influenced the clothing he has created through his brand MSFTSrep[56] and his personal clothing style, even wearing Batman protective armor to Kanye West’s and Kim Kardashian’s wedding[58] and his prom[59] and Poseidon’s willingness to wear womenswear and his freedom with clothing is inspirational.[60]

Smith started his own clothing/lifestyle brand called MSFTSrep. The range includes hoodies, t-shirt, trousers and vests. In May 2013 Smith collaborated with a Korean designer, Choi Bum Suk, to create a pop-up store in which customers can buy clothes with their collaborated logos.[61]

Smith raised controversy in 2016 after modelling in a womenswear campaign for Louis Vuitton wearing a skirt.[62] Explaining his choice to wear a skirt, Smith said he was attempting to combat bullying, saying “In five years, when a kid goes to school wearing a skirt, he won’t get beat up and kids won’t get mad at him.”[63] Smith continued to wear womenswear throughout the rest of 2016.[64] Smith was the first male model to model women’s wear for Louis Vuitton.[65] Smith created a denim-line with fashion brand G-Star in 2018.[66][67]

Smith is a partner in spring water company Just Water[68] starting when he was just twelve years old.[69] Just Water is attempting to create a water filtration system thats cheap and can be used in poorer areas and nations[70] and wants to later help with water infrastructure and creating more environmentally friendly construction methods by producing its own drywall.[71] On 27 August, 2018, Just Water launched officially in the UK.[72]

Personal life

Smith’s father, Will, revealed that his son sought an emancipation ruling, with the consent of his parents, as a 15th birthday present. Will revealed to the media that Smith’s primary motivation is the establishment of his own residence and also explained that his children are not subject to strict parenting conduct: “We generally don’t believe in punishment. From the time Jaden was five or six we would sit him down, and all he has to do is be able to explain why what he did was the right thing for his life.”[73] However, Smith and his father appeared together on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on May 15, 2013, and Smith said:

The thing that people don’t get is everything at his house is free. So I can get anything and everything at his house, so I’m going to be there for 20, 30 more years. He [Will Smith] says that as soon as I have a movie that’s bigger than one of his movies I can get my own house.[74]

In June 2017, Smith moved out of his parents’ house into a $4 million home in Hidden Hills.[75]

Smith is a vivid “conspiracy theorist” and his statements often generate controversy.[76] This includes theories about the Illuminati[77][78], tweets about Chemtrails[79] and believing extraterrestrial life exists.[80]

In 2013, Smith raised controversy when he criticized traditional education and advised people to drop out of school.[10] Talking about teenagers who go to public school, Smith said “kids who go to normal school are so teenagery, so angsty.”[81]

Smith dated Sarah Snyder from 2015 to 2017. The two broke up after “growing apart” amid cheating rumors.[82] Snyder inspired numerous songs on Smith’s debut album, Syre.[

George Herman Ruth Jr. was born on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland to parents George Sr. and Kate. George Jr. was one of eight children, although only he and his sister Mamie survived. George Jr.’s parents worked long hours, leaving little time to watch over him and his sister. The lack of parental guidance allowed George Jr. to become a bit unruly, often skipping school and causing trouble in the neighborhood. When George Jr. turned 7 years old, his parents realized he needed a stricter environment and therefore sent him to the St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, a school run by Catholic monks from an order of the Xaverian Brothers. St. Mary’s provided a strict and regimented environment that helped shape George Jr.’s future. Not only did George Jr. learn vocational skills, but he developed a passion and love for the game of baseball.

Brother Matthias, one of the monks at St. Mary’s, took an instant liking to George Jr. and became a positive role model and father-like figure to George Jr. while at St. Mary’s. Brother Matthias also happened to help George Jr. refine his baseball skills, working tirelessly with him on hitting, fielding and pitching skills. George Jr. became so good at baseball that the Brothers invited Jack Dunn, owner of the Baltimore Orioles, to come watch George Jr. play. Dunn was obviously impressed, as he offered a contract to George Jr. in February 1914 after watching him for less than an hour. Since George Jr. was only 19 at the time, Dunn had to become George’s legal guardian in order to complete the contract. Upon seeing George Jr. for the first time, the Orioles players referred to him as “Jack’s newest babe”, and thus the most famous nickname in American sports history was born. Thereafter, George Herman Ruth Jr. was known as the Babe.

The Babe performed well for Dunn and the Orioles, leading to the sale of Babe to the Boston Red Sox by Dunn. While Babe is most known for his prodigious power as a slugger, he started his career as a pitcher, and a very good one at that. In 1914, Babe appeared in five games for the Red Sox, pitching in four of them. He won his major league debut on July 11, 1914. However, due to a loaded roster, Babe was optioned to the Red Sox minor league team, the Providence Grays, where he helped lead them to the International League pennant. Babe became a permanent fixture in the Red Sox rotation in 1915, accumulating an 18-8 record with an ERA of 2.44. He followed up his successful first season with a 23-12 campaign in 1916, leading the league with a 1.75 ERA. In 1917, he went 24-13 with a 2.01 ERA and a staggering 35 complete games in 38 starts. However, by that time, Babe had displayed enormous power in his limited plate appearances, so it was decided his bat was too good to be left out of the lineup on a daily basis. As a result, in 1918, the transition began to turn Babe into an everyday player. That year, he tied for the major-league lead in homeruns with 11, and followed that up by setting a single season home run record of 29 dingers in 1919. Little did he know that the 1919 season would be his last with Boston. On December 26, 1919, Babe was sold to the New York Yankees and the two teams would never be the same again.

After becoming a New York Yankee, Babe’s transition to a full-time outfielder became complete. Babe dominated the game, amassing numbers that had never been seen before. He changed baseball from a grind it out style to one of power and high scoring games. He re-wrote the record books from a hitting standpoint, combining a high batting average with unbelievable power. The result was an assault on baseball’s most hallowed records. In 1920, he bested the homerun record he set in 1919 by belting a staggering 54 homeruns, a season in which no other player hit more than 19 and only one team hit more than Babe did individually. But Babe wasn’t done, as his 1921 season may have been the greatest in MLB history. That season, he blasted a new record of 59 homeruns, drove in 171 RBI, scored 177 runs, batted .376 and had an unheard of .846 slugging percentage. Babe was officially a superstar and enjoyed a popularity never seen before in professional baseball. With Babe leading the way, the Yankees became the most recognizable and dominant team in baseball, setting attendance records along the way. When the Yankees moved to a new stadium in 1923, it was appropriately dubbed “The House that Ruth Built”.

Babe’s mythical stature grew even more in 1927 when, as a member of “Murderer’s Row”, he set a new homerun record of 60, a record that would stand for 34 years. During his time with the Yankees, Babe ignited the greatest dynasty in all of American sport. Prior to his arrival, the Yankees had never won a title of any kind. After joining the Yankees prior to the 1920 season, Babe helped the Yankees capture seven pennants and four World Series titles. The 1927 team is still considered by many to be the greatest in baseball history. Upon retiring from the Boston Braves in 1935, Babe held an astonishing 56 major league records at the time, including the most revered record in baseball… 714 homeruns.

In 1936, the Baseball Hall of Fame was inaugurated and Babe was elected as one of its first five inductees. During the fall of 1946, it was discovered that Babe had a malignant tumor on his neck, and his health began to deteriorate quickly. On June 13, 1948, his jersey number “3” was retired by the Yankees during his last appearance at Yankee Stadium. Babe lost his battle with cancer on August 16, 1948. His body lay in repose in Yankee Stadium, with his funeral two days later at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. In all, over 100,000 people lined up and paid their respects to the Babe.

Despite passing over 60 years ago, Babe still remains the greatest figure in major league baseball, and one of the true icons in American history. The Babe helped save baseball from the ugly Black Sox scandal, and gave hope to millions during The Great Depression. He impacted the game in a way never seen before, or since. He continues to be the benchmark by which all other players are measured. Despite last playing nearly 75 years ago, Babe is still widely considered the greatest player in Major League Baseball history.

During his teenage years, Brian Todd Collins attended after-school music programs, where he produced hip-hop beats and tracks. He cites Timbaland, Pharrell Williams and Swizz Beatz as part of his inspiration for its work ethic with the production and songwriting, when he said: “These were artists and producers who were writing for other people in all types of genres. It just gave me an open ear for all different types of music and that’s how I approached it”. At 22, Collins began rapping full-time.[5] In 2009, Collins adopted the monikerRockstar. On February 1, 2010, Collins released his first official mixtape, titled World Tour. The mixtape gained popularity that grabbed some of the attention towards a radio disc jockey, DJ Ill Will, founder of HotNewHipHop. Collins signed to DJ Ill Will’s Tha Alumni Group label. Collins changed his stage name to Kid Ink.

In 2011, Ink released his second mixtape, called Crash Landing. The mixtape features guest appearances from Roscoe Dash, Ty$ and Meek Mill, among others. During the summer of 2011, Ink released his third mixtape, called Daydreamer that made available for digital download.
