About Valerie Solanas

Known for a radical feminist work titled the SCUM Manifesto, this twentieth-century writer is perhaps best remembered as the would-be assassin of her acquaintance and sometimes artistic collaborator Andy Warhol. After she shot Warhol, he was able to recover through emergency surgery.

Early life

After graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park, she took graduate psychology courses at both the University of Minnesota and the University of California, Berkeley.


At various points in her life, she was homeless and a prostitute. While on trial for attempted murder, she was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

Family of Valerie Solanas

Born in New Jersey to a family of Spanish and Italian heritage, she moved to New York City in the 1960s. In the early 1950s, she gave birth to a son who was immediately put up for adoption by social services.
