About Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands

Dutch royal and member of the Houses of House Orange-Nassau and Amsberg who ascended to the throne in 2013. He was born the eldest child of German-born diplomat Claus van Amsberg and Dutch Princess-turned-Queen Beatrix.


Before being crowned King of the Netherlands, he earned a master s degree in history from Leiden University and joined the Royal Netherlands Navy.


In the late 1980s, he became a volunteer pilot for the African Medical Research and Education Foundation. Also an athlete, he participated in the 1992 New York City Marathon.

He married the Argentine-born Maxima Zorreguieta Cerruti, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, in 2002. They welcomed children named Catharina-Amalia Princess of Orange, Princess Alexia, and Princess Ariane.
