About William Van Alen

Designer of the Chrysler Building in New York City from 1929 until 1930. His other works included the Hotel Astor in 1902 and other multistory commercial structures.


He studied at the first independent atelier in the United States, Atelier Masqueray, for three years under the famed Emmanuel Louis Masqueray. He was awarded the Paris Prize scholarship in 1908, which allowed him to then study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the famed Victor Laloux.


His career was negatively impacted by the Great Depression, and he turned to teaching sculpturing.
