About Tanya Haden

Los Angeles-based cellist as well as artist and singer who performed alongside her triplet sisters in a group called the Haden Triplets. She previously performed in several other bands, including one called Let’s Go Sailing, and created the Imaginary Bear puppet show.

Early life

She graduated with a Master’s of Fine Arts with a major in Experimental Animation from California Institute of the Arts.

Trivia

She performs the cello as an additional member of the Silversun Pickups and was featured on the band’s EP Pikul. She has also played with the indie folk band Sea Wolf and the rock band The Warlocks.

She and her husband Jack Black have sons named Samuel Haden Black and Thomas David Black. As The Haden Triplets, she played the cello, Rachel played the bass, and Petra played the violin. She has a brother Josh who is a bassist and singer as well for the band Spain.

A MacArthur Genius Grant-winning classical cellist, she is notable for her Leonard Bernstein Prize-winning performance at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, as well as for her Caramoor International Music Festival performance of composer Lera Auerbach’s 24 Preludes for Cello and Piano.

Early life

She began training as a cellist when she was just four years old and made her debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at the age of thirteen.

She earned an undergraduate degree in Russian history from New York City’s Columbia University.

Family of Alisa Weilerstein

She is the daughter of pianist Vivian Hornik Weilerstein and Cleveland Quartet violinist Donald Weilerstein and the sister of conductor and violinist Joshua Weilerstein. She and her parents formed the Boston-based Weilerstein Trio.

Classical cellist who made his career by following his fascination with the music of various cultures and the ways that music can be blended together.

Early life

He wanted to play the double bass because he liked the size of the instrument, but chose the cello as a compromise between the viola, which he had previously learned to play.

Trivia

He won several Grammy Awards, was honored with the National Medal of Arts in 2001, and was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.

About Max Lilja

Known best as one of the founding members of a symphonic metal quartet called Apocalyptica, this Finnish cellist also performed with a heavy metal band called Hevein. He recorded his debut solo album, Plays Electronica By One Cello, in 2013.

He began playing the cello when he was just seven years old and went on to train at the Sibelius Academy, where he was appointed first cellist in the school’s orchestra.
