About Joachim Rønning

Director who rose to fame for his work on the 2012 historical drama Kon-Tiki. He earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for best foreign language film in response to his efforts while working alongside his frequent partner Espen Sandberg. 


He graduated from Stockholm Film School in 1994. He garnered acclaim for his and his friend Espen Sandberg s work co-directing commercials, including the popular 2001 Budweiser “Rex” spot, which was named “viewer s favorite” in a 2001 USA Today poll.


He co-directed the 2017 Disney action film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He was also hired to direct the 2019 Disney fantasy film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
